Raven and Naglieri Test - Percentile Ranking and IQ
By Inderbir Kaur Sandhu, Ph.D
Q: My child who's 6 years and 1 month scored in the 99th percentile for both the Raven Progressive Matrices as well as the the Naglieri nonverbal ability test 2 as part of being considered for entry into a Gifted and Talented program at her school. Please let me know how these percentile rankings relate to IQ. Thank you for your help!
A: As a rule of thumb, a score in the 99th percentile indicates superior ability and performance on any given test. Based on a bell curve, 99th percentile usually indicated an intelligence quotient at around 135 and above (depending on the rarity index). The further it is from the mean (100), the higher the performance. (e.g., a percentile of 99.95 would convert to an IQ of 150).
This also means that your child scored better than 99% of the population based on the norms used for these tests. I would think that she should get a placement into the G&T programme quite easily. Hope that helps. Best of luck!
